
VA CTAR-21 Receiver Project
Bringing the Tavor back to life!
Large numbers of Israeli Tavor CTAR-21 rifles are beginning to enter the United States as surplus parts kits.
These kits contain most of the original rifle, but—as is typical with imported surplus firearms—the original receiver has been destroyed as part of the demilitarization and import process.
The VA CTAR-21 Receiver Project is Vanguard Arms' effort to independently reverse engineer the original receiver, document the process, and develop a modern replacement for restoration and preservation projects.
We did not design the original CTAR-21 receiver. Our work is based on independent measurement, reverse engineering, prototyping, and testing of original surplus components.

Our goal is to make the development process visible instead of disappearing for six months and simply announcing a finished product.

01 — Surplus Kits Arrive
STATUS: COMPLETE
CTAR-21 parts kits have begun arriving in the United States from overseas surplus inventories.
The kits include the majority of the original firearm components, but the original serialized receiver has been destroyed during demilitarization.
For collectors, builders, and enthusiasts, that creates an unusual problem:
Almost everything needed to restore the platform exists—except the central component that ties it all together.
That is where this project started.
02 — Documenting the Original Receiver
STATUS: COMPELTE
Before anything could be recreated, we needed to understand exactly what the original receiver was doing.
An original receiver was carefully examined and documented, including:

Critical dimensions

Internal clearances

Assembly relationships

Features interacting with original surplus components
This stage formed the foundation of the reverse-engineering effort.


03 — Reverse Engineering the CAD
STATUS: COMPELTE
Using measurements from original components, we independently recreated the receiver geometry in CAD.
The goal was not simply to create something that looked correct.
The model needed to correctly interface with original CTAR-21 components and provide a foundation that could be evaluated, revised, and eventually manufactured.
04 - Fitment and Assembly Testing
STATUS: In Progress
We now have several prototypes that have been verified to fit the original CTAR-21 components.
Now, we are translating that into the Aluminum receiver and building the documentation.
We are releasing the files. There are no secrets here. We want you to see exactly how we did it.

05 — Sign-Up/Release

We want full transparency in our ordering process. While we are still finalizing the release details, I can confidently say we will not be doing full price preorders and disappearing like other companies. As many folks have asked us to take sign-ups, we will open up small refundable deposits on a receiver after the production run begins with clear expectations on final product, timeline, and shipping information. If you change your mind, the deposit is refundable.
